Everton 2-0 Liverpool LIVE REACTION: Klopp says ‘I can only apologise’ as Toffees all-but end Reds title dreams while Van Dijk claims ‘everyone has to look in the mirror’

Liverpool's Premier League title hopes were effectively ended with defeat to Everton in Jurgen Klopp's final Merseyside derby.

The Reds lost 2-0 against their Merseyside rivals at Goodison Park to keep them three points off leaders Arsenal with four games to go.

Jarrad Branthwaite opened the scoring with a bundled finish before Dominic Calvert-Lewin sealed the deal close to the hour mark.

Everton were by far and away the more deserving side, with their first derby triumph in years all-but guaranteeing their survival.

  • And that's it from us!

Liverpool's Premier League title dreams ended in their own city - but across the park at Goodison!

Klopp seemingly won't get the fairytale ending his fans wanted, to find out more about how it went so wrong click below...

  • Klopp: 'I can only apologise'

"Arsenal and Manchester City must have a very bad moment," Liverpool manager Klopp says when asked if Liverpool can still win the title.

"I don't know. I can only apologise for today to the people. We should have done better but we didn't."

  • Van Dijk: 'Everyone has to look in the mirror'

Van Dijk speaking to Sky Sports: "Very disappointed in so many ways.

"I think everyone has to look in the mirror, look at their own performance and if they really gave everything. Do they really want to win the league?

"We are fighting, there are games after tonight, but play like we did overall in the game like today… not winning challenges and giving the ref an opportunity to give a free-kick like he did many times, then you have no chance to win a title.

"It's a tough one and we need to do much better against a side that's [fighting] relegation. We had clear-cut chances in the first half that we should have scored but we weren't good enough and it starts with the fight. We can't let the season go out like this."

  • Carragher: Nunez miss was unforgiveable

Jamie Carragher told Sky Sports: "The chance Nunez missed before half-time is unforgiveable at this level.

"That is not acceptable, especially when Liverpool are going for a title."

  • Van Dijk - 'We have no chance'

"We have to do much better," Liverpool captain told Sky Sports.

"If we play like today we have no chance to consider ourselves in the title [race]."

  • 'Great experience and memory'

Calvert-Lewin told Sky Sports: "Pressure is a privilege and it's my responsibility to carry that. It's nice when you work hard and get the reward with a goal. It's extra special in a local derby.

"I know what it means to the fans and myself. It's a great result - we needed three points. Everything came together tonight.

"The atmosphere was extra special. Electric. It hasn't been like that for a while. To do that on a night like that is a great experience and memory. We'll kick-on now."

  • Pickford reacts

Pickford speaking to Sky Sports: "It's my first experience winning that derby at home. Great atmosphere, great application from the lads. A deserving and massive win. Hard work pays off.

"You have to put the hard yards in. Dom is grafting up there by himself and he gets the rewards with a goal. A clean sheet, a great team effort."

  • Everton 2-0 Liverpool – Reaction

Liverpool have gone 1-0 down in 15 different Premier League games this season. Only in 2022-23 (16) have they conceded first in more games in a single league campaign under Jürgen Klopp.

Liverpool have made 99 changes to their starting XI’s in the Premier League this season, with only Brighton (121) making more. Their six changes tonight from Sunday’s win at Fulham was their most for a Merseyside derby since April 2016 (9 changes in a 4-0 win at Anfield).

  • Everton 2-0 Liverpool – Reaction

Jarrad Branthwaite (21y 302d) became Everton’s youngest goalscorer in a Premier League Merseyside derby since Romelu Lukaku in November 2013 (20y 194d) and their youngest Englishman to score in this fixture since Francis Jeffers in April 1999 (18y 68d).

  • Everton 2-0 Liverpool – Reaction

Everton have beaten Liverpool at home in the Premier League for the first time since October 2010 (also a 2-0 win), ending their 12-game winless run in Merseyside derbies at Goodison Park (D9 L3 before tonight).

Liverpool have lost two of their last three Premier League games (W1), as many defeats as in their previous 42 matches in the competition combined (W28 D12).

  • 'End of title run for Liverpool'

Jamie Carragher told Sky Sports: "This is the end of the title run for Liverpool.

"It almost feels like the end. They just have to make sure they finish the season strongly.

"They are not clinical enough in both boxes."

"Tonight is Everton's night, you have to take it on the chin."

  • Everton 2-0 Liverpool – Reaction

Alexander-Arnold’s reaction as they closed in on defeat appeared to capture the overall feeling of Reds fans.

After being substituted for Joe Gomez late on, the right-back could be seen with his head in his hands on the Liverpool bench.

He and fellow supporters will know that defeat to their rivals could all but end their chances of winning this season’s title.

Dropped points away at Manchester United before a shock home loss at the hands of Crystal Palace raised questions over their ability to go all the way.

Everton have now become the latest side to inflict misery upon them in the season run-in, with their chances of glory now looking slim.
