Leeds United miss out as Hickey bites for former club Celtic

Leeds United took that first step towards a return to Championship football yesterday with small-group training at Thorp Arch. Whilst that will give fans a certain feeling of glee, news coming through from 90MIN.com may temper that somewhat.

According to 90MIN.com, in an exclusive written by Tom Gott, Leeds United are set to miss out on teenage left-back Aaron Hickey who is set for a return to former club Celtic.

17-year-old Hickey, who has just seen his side, Hearts, relegated from the SPL is expected to move on from the Edinburgh outfit. A ‘source’ has told 90MIN.com that “it will be Celtic who win the race for his signature.

The Glasgow-born teen, who has swapped between the Hearts and Celtic youth set-ups, made the step up from the Hearts Under-18s last season to the first-team. Hea featured in 22 games in a season where the Jam Tarts fought unsuccessfully against relegation. The youngster added to the cause with a goal and an assist.

However, such has been the youngster’s displays that it is thought he will move on from the relegated club. These displays have been enough to draw a number of scouts to watch him in action. Amongst the Premier League sides keeping a keen eye on him were Leeds United.

This interest was noted as far back as October last year with Leeds United obviously wanting to add to the talent that they already have in the ranks at Elland Road.

Leeds have added to those ranks recently with highly-rated Northern Ireland teen, Charlie Allen, said set to join the Whites. The move for youth seems to be a pattern that the West Yorkshire club has taken since Andrea Radrizzani took full ownership of the club away from Massimo Cellino.

Young players from the continent have been brought over from some big sides and blended with the addition of up-and-coming youngsters from the domestic game. However, it looks likely that the Whites have missed out this time with Hickey slated to be joining Celtic.
