What’s next for ex Coventry City player following loan spell in Scotland?

The Scottish season was formally ended last week amidst the coronavirus pandemic. Now, with finances being closely monitored, many clubs have begun to release players and send loan players back to their parent club. The Coventry Telegraph has been looking at what could be next for former Coventry man, Marc McNulty.

McNulty spent just one season with The Sky Blues, but it will be a season he will never forget. He helped guide Coventry to promotion from League Two in the 2017/18 season. The Scottish striker scored an impressive 28 goals in 52 appearances whilst at the club.

This impressive season led to McNulty join Reading for a transfer fee of £1 million in the 2018 summer transfer window. However, McNulty has only made a handful of appearances for Reading, all of which were at the start of the 2018/19 season. Since then he has been out on loan at Sunderland and had two spells in Scotland with Hibernian.

McNulty still has two years left to run on his Reading contract, although, he has been previously told he is unwanted at The Madjeski stadium. It is likely that McNulty is on a fairly good wage and it may be difficult to find another club that is willing to match that wage due to the financial constraints Covid-19 has caused. McNulty teased Coventry fans during the January window that a return may be on the cards when he spoke to the Nii Lamptey Show podcast.

“Mark Robins was always brilliant with me and I still speak to him… now and again. He was brilliant with me, the gaffer. It is always easy when a striker isn’t playing so well for the manager to drop you but I will always remember the manager doing little finishing drills with me after training and telling me that I was doing the right things”.

McNulty certainly looks back fondly at his time at the Ricoh Arena. If a deal could be reached to cancel his contract with Reading, Coventry City may just be one of the clubs that comes calling to try and sign the striker who has proved he can score goals.
