Huddersfield Town sever Siewert with Terriers winless since February

Huddersfield Town’s decision to go German with David Wagner paid dividends for the Terriers, the former Borussia Dortmund #2 gaining promotion at the first attempt.

He also kept the West Yorkshire side in the Premier League during their first season after promotion. After a run of inconsistent performances and results, Town and Wagner parted company in mid-January this year.

Staring down both barrels  of a relegation gun, Town went German again with his replacement Jan Siewert, again from Dortmund. Try as he might, he couldn’t keep the Terriers in the top-tier and Huddersfield found themselves relegated back to the Sky Bet Championship.

It has been a tumultuous start back in the second level of English football. Just a single point and two losses has seen them winless since February. Tonight’s 2-1 loss at home proved too much for the hierarchy at the West Yorkshire club, the Terriers sacking Siewert after a 14-game winless streak.

The writing was on the cards before the official word was received from Huddersfield themselves:

However, the official word was only a short way behind the building rumours. The following is the text of Huddersfield’s statement:

“Huddersfield Town has this evening terminated the contract of Head Coach Jan Siewert with immediate effect.

Siewert joined the Club from Borussia Dortmund in January 2019 in the Club’s ultimately unsuccessful fight against relegation from the Premier League and led the team in the first four competitive games of the new season, with his final game in charge being the Sky Bet Championship defeat to Fulham on Friday evening.

No further comment will be made this evening.”

Huddersfield Town’s thoughts now turn from the 2-1 defeat at home to Fulham to replacing Jan Siewert in what could be a difficult campaign for the Terriers.
