Jurgen Klopp says he is feeling "mixed emotions" following Liverpool's exit from the Europa League to Atalanta.

Although Liverpool started strongly with a seventh-minute penalty goal from Mohammed Salah, Atalanta held firm to secure their spot in the next round, securing a 3-1 aggregate victory.

Klopp said to TNT Sports: "It is mixed emotions. We are out but I am happy with the game. We would have wished that we could have gone to Dublin but that hasn't happened.

"We now have one competition left and we will throw ourselves into that completely."

Virgil van Dijk says Liverpool will "need everyone now for the last push in the league" following their exit in the Europa League quarter-final to Atalanta.

Atalanta advanced to the Europa League semi-finals despite a 1-0 loss to Liverpool, securing a 3-1 aggregate victory and edging closer to their first-ever European final.

Although Liverpool started strongly with a seventh-minute penalty goal from Mohammed Salah, Atalanta held firm to secure their spot in the next round.

Van Dijk said to TNT Sports: "We won tonight and we kept a clean sheet, so there are so many more positives we can take. Yes, it is a bad feeling to be out so we have to get back up.

"We have been through difficult moments all together, so showing maturity and togetherness is the key to this. And professionalism to be ready for Sunday as that will also be a tough game. We all have a responsibility to be ready for it physically and mentally.

"We need everyone now for the last push in the league. Hopefully our fans will be there because we need them now more than ever because anything is still possible."

Liverpool travel to face Fulham on Sunday in the Premier League.

Liverpool and West Ham United are both out of the Europa League after aggregate defeats to Atalanta and Bayer Leverkusen.

Mohamed Salah had scored from the penalty spot early in the second leg to give his side belief, but it wasn't enough to mount a comeback for Jurgen Klopp's men on the night.

Michail Antonio, meanwhile, gave West Ham the lead on the night after firing his header into the net in the 13th minute following an assist from Jarrod Bowen. Jeremie Frimpong, however, scored late on to ensure the game finished 1-1.

Both Liverpool and West Ham lost 3-1 on aggregate across two legs.

Why Martinez wasn't sent off despite second yellow card vs Lille

Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez was shown a second yellow card in his side’s penalty shootout win against Lille in the Conference League quarter-final but was not sent off for the offence.

The 31-year-old received a warning from Slovakian referee Ivan Kruzliak before being shown a second yellow card.

A rule, however, allowed him to stay on the pitch for the remainder of the shootout, where he once again emerged as the hero.

The Athletic explains why Martinez was allowed to stay on the pitch and win the contest for his side...

Aston Villa are through to the Conference League semi-finals following a 4-3 penalty shootout victory against Lille.

Goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez was at the centre of drama after saving a spot-kick from Benjamin Andre.

Martinez, however, was shown a second yellow card beforehand, causing controversy as to why he was allowed to continue.

However, IFAB, football's lawmakers, state that "yellow cards and warnings from the game are not carried forward into penalties".

The match ended 2-1 to Lille on the night, sending the game to extra time after Villa secured a win in the first leg by the same scoreline.

Real Madrid requested for their La Liga clash against Real Sociedad to be moved due to their participation in the Champions League semi-final.

The match against Sociedad was originally due to take place on Saturday, April 27, but the game will now be played one day earlier.

La Liga say these types of requests regarding the fixture schedules are common among clubs, and they always try to accommodate these as long as they are reasoned, compatible with competitions and contractual commitments.

Madrid progressed to the semi-finals of the Champions League after defeating Manchester City on penalties following a 4-4 aggregate scoreline.

The first leg matches of the Champions League semi-finals will be played on April 30 and May 1, while the second leg matches will be the following week on May 7 and 8.

Colwill set to miss Chelsea's FA Cup semi-final vs Man City

Chelsea defender Levi Colwill is losing his bid to return from a toe injury in time to face Manchester City in the FA Cup semi final this weekend.

Colwill has missed Chelsea’s last six matches with the problem. The issue, which was eventually diagnosed as a metatarsophalangeal joint ligament injury, was first sustained against Crystal Palace in February but got worse following the 2-2 draw with Brentford a month later.

The England international, who had to wear a protective boot as part of his rehabilitation, started light training a few weeks ago and targeted making the showpiece occasion against Pep Guardiola’s side at Wembley Stadium.

But while the 21-year-old is making progress, it looks like the game is going to come too early for the centre-back to make the matchday squad. The Premier League games at Arsenal and Aston Villa next week are now being seen as more likely to make a comeback.

Liverpool’s Ljinders targeted by Besiktas over vacant managerial role

Besiktas are the latest club to show an interest in Liverpool assistant manager Pep Lijnders.

The Turkish club are searching for a new head coach after sacking Fernando Santos earlier this month, and they rate the Dutchman highly.

Bolt, Burnley and the story behind one of the season’s strangest photos

It was one of the more unexpected social media posts of the Premier League season.

It came from Burnley and showed a visitor to the club’s training ground smiling in front of a slogan reading: “It’s a way of life.”

This, however, was no ordinary guest: this was Usain Bolt, the eight-time Olympic gold medal winner, the holder of world records in the men’s 100m and 200m, and one of the most famous sportsmen on the planet.

This is the story behind it.

Araujo responds to Gundogan comments on PSG red card

Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo has spoken of respecting “codes and values” in response to team-mate Ilkay Gundogan’s comments on his sending-off against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League.

Araujo, 25, was dismissed in the 29th minute of the second leg of the quarter-final on Tuesday. Barca had won the first leg in Paris 3-2 and led 1-0 at Montjuic following Raphinha’s 12th-minute opener, but the red card proved to be a turning point in the tie.

PSG ran out 4-1 winners in the second leg with four unanswered goals to advance to the semi-final stage with a 6-4 aggregate victory. After the match, Gundogan, 33, highlighted Araujo’s foul as “killing us” in respect to their hopes of progress.

When asked directly what he thought about Gundogan's comments, Araujo said: "I prefer to keep it with myself what I think about those comments. I have my codes and values that I think you need to respect."

Olsen agrees long-term contract as Houston Dynamo head coach

Olsen agrees long-term contract as Houston Dynamo head coach

The Houston Dynamo and head coach Ben Olsen have agreed to a new, long-term contract through 2026, sources briefed on the deal tell The Athletic.

In his first year in charge, Olsen led the club to win the U.S. Open Cup in 2023 as well as the Western Conference final. It was the club’s best season in more than a decade.

This year, despite injuries to the club’s two highest-paid players Hector Herrera and Sebas Ferreira, the Dynamo are up to a strong 13 points after seven matches.

Under Olsen, the Dynamo have played an attractive, possession-based brand of soccer centered around the skills of Herrera, Coco Carrasquilla, Artur, Amine Bassi and other top technical players. Herrera had 17 assists in 2023, second-most in the league.

The Dynamo had missed the playoffs in eight of the nine seasons before Olsen was named head coach. Before Houston, Olsen was the long-time head coach of D.C. United. He was named 2014 MLS Coach of the Year and is top 10 all-time among MLS managers in wins.

Palestinian FA asks for Israel to be expelled from FIFA

The Palestinian Football Association (PFA) has asked FIFA to expel the Israel Football Association (IFA) on the grounds of the country’s alleged human rights and humanitarian law violations committed in the war in Israel and Gaza.

The proposal was made by the PFA in a submission to the international football governing body for discussion at the 74th annual FIFA congress in Bangkok, where the 211 member nations will vote on a number of key issues — including confirmation of the host nation of the 2027 Women’s World Cup.

The PFA says they want to “address the unprecedented international human rights and humanitarian law violations committed by Israel” and called on FIFA to push the IFA to address discrimination and racism within its league and acknowledge violations of the federation’s statutes.

Kane on semi-final meeting with Bellingham: 'We went abroad to achieve this'

Kane on semi-final meeting with Bellingham: 'We went abroad to achieve this'

Harry Kane says facing England teammate Jude Bellingham the Champions League semi-finals vindicates the pair’s moves abroad.

Kane’s Bayern Munich progressed to the semi-finals with a 3-2 aggregate victory over Arsenal on Wednesday and Bellingham’s Real Madrid were later confirmed as their last-four opponents after their penalty shootout win against Manchester City.

Bellingham or Kane — and his Bayern team-mate Eric Dier — could become the first English male players to win the Champions League with an overseas club since Owen Hargreaves won the competition with Bayern Munich in 2001.

“I’m really happy for him (Bellingham) but it will be another war against his team,” Kane said.

“That’s the experiences we both went abroad to try to achieve: to play in these big nights in the Champions League, to play in these big semi-finals. It will be one to enjoy and I’m sure there will be a lot of English fans watching both of us.”

Barcelona handed suspended UEFA ban after fans' 'racist behaviour' against PSG

Barcelona have been fined €25,000 and handed a suspended one-match ban on selling tickets to away fans for UEFA competitions for “racist behaviour” of supporters during the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final against Paris Saint-Germain.

Barcelona won the first leg in Paris 3-2 but lost the return leg 4-1 at Montjuic to be eliminated from the competition at the quarter-final stage.

On Thursday, the UEFA appeals body fined Barcelona on three separate counts of supporter conduct during the first leg in France; €25,000 for “racist behaviour”, €2,000 for the lighting of fireworks and €5,000 for acts of damage.

Alongside the fine for "racist behaviour", UEFA have placed a suspended one-match ban on the club selling tickets to away fans for matches in European competitions for a probationary period of one year, starting from April 18.

FA Cup replays to be scrapped from next season

FA Cup replays to be scrapped from next season

The FA Cup has scrapped replays from the first round proper from the 2024-25 season in a six-year agreement to restructure the competition.

The 2025 FA Cup final will be played on the penultimate round of the Premier League season, with no league fixtures to be staged on the Friday night or Saturday to give exclusivity to the event, while there will be no further midweek rounds in the competition.

This season’s FA Cup final will take place on May 25 at Wembley Stadium, six days after the final round of matches in the Premier League season.

The semi-final stage will take place over the weekend of April 20-21, with current holders Manchester City facing Chelsea in Saturday’s match before Manchester United play Championship side Coventry City the following day — with both matches to be staged at Wembley.

The FA Cup finals in 2021 and 2022 were both staged one week before the end of the Premier League season, but all other finals since 2013 have been staged following its conclusion.

The FA Cup will also scrap replays from the first-round stage — the round at which League One and League Two teams enter the competition — onwards next season.

The move is designed to ease fixture congestion, with replays currently in place for the first-round to the fourth-round stage. Replays from the fifth-round stage onwards were removed by the FA in 2018.

Bellingham proud of first Real Madrid game in front of brother Jobe - 'It was beautiful'

Jude Bellingham described eliminating Champions League holders Manchester City to reach the last four of the competition in front of his brother as a "beautiful" moment.

Bellingham, 20, played the entirety of Real Madrid's quarter-final second leg at the Etihad, scoring in the shootout to help the 13-time winners advance 4-3 on penalties after the tie finished 4-4 on aggregate.

The England international revealed brother Jobe — currently at Sunderland — was in attendance to see him run out in his new club colours for the very first time.

Asked whether the victory was extra special coming on home soil, Belligham told TNT Sports: "It was beautiful, my brother's here today and it's the first time he's got to see me play for Madrid.

"I feel really proud of that kind of stuff. It's the main part of why I do it, to be honest. I get a lot of fun out of playing football but the idea of being able to play a game and come home to my mum and dad is one of the things I love the most."

The former Birmingham City and Borussia Dortmund midfielder has made an instant impact since arriving in Spain, scoring 20 goals in 35 appearances — adding 10 assists — in all competitions.

"I could never have dreamed of how it's started, not just because of the performances and the goals, just the feeling you get playing for the club," he said.

"You get to put that badge on your chest and you feel so grateful to be there."

Madrid will take on Bayern Munich for a place in the Wembley final, with the first leg set for April 30 at the Allianz Arena.

Bonmati: WSL an 'attractive' league for Spanish players

Bonmati: WSL an 'attractive' league for Spanish players

David Ramos/Getty Images

Ballon d’Or winner Aitana Bonmati says the Women’s Super League is an “attractive” competition for Spanish players after criticising the lack of legacy in the domestic game following Spain’s Women’s World Cup.

The 26-year-old Barcelona midfielder highlighted how the WSL empowers its players and singled out Arsenal and Manchester City’s style of play as desirable factors to Spain internationals.

A number of Spanish players have moved to the WSL in recent seasons, with Laia Aleixandri and Leila Ouahabi joining Manchester City, Lucia Garcia and Irene Guerrero signing for Manchester United and Laia Codina moving to Arsenal.

Former Barcelona captain Vicky Losada signed for her third WSL club last summer when she joined Brighton following spells at Manchester City and Arsenal.

"You in England are doing things so well," Bonmati told BBC Sport. "You treat women's football good. You give power to the players and to the league. Here in Spain, I cannot say the same.

"The league in England is competitive and every year they are putting more money into it to develop it. They are making the league more attractive."

No Barca, Liverpool or Man Utd. What now for the new Club World Cup?

It’s FIFA’s shiny new toy and the brainchild of the body’s president, Gianni Infantino.

Yet the inaugural, expanded, 32-team Club World Cup, which will take place in the United States next summer, will kick off without a number of football’s European heavyweight sides and the participation of many of the game’s stars is far from guaranteed.

Barcelona’s 4-1 home defeat by Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday, condemning them to a 6-4 aggregate exit from the Champions League quarter-finals, means they join a list of definite absentees that already includes Manchester United, Liverpool and AC Milan.

Arsenal will also miss out after being knocked out of the Champions League by Bayern Munich.

So with some of the world’s most decorated clubs and plenty of individual footballers with the greatest commercial pull failing to book their places, what does this mean for the new competition?
